Sharon Bort |
Co-President
Sharon Bort serves as the Sustainability Community Officer at MIT Solve. She brings her enthusiasm for sustainability to cultivate new partnerships with innovators and leaders around the world to find solutions to global challenges such as the Circular Economy. Outside of work, Sharon is an avid traveler, cyclist, gardener, and aspiring fermentation fan. She is also involved in her local community as an organizer for Civic Series and the Riverway Project. She has a B.A. in Global Environmental Studies from Clark University and an M.B.A. in Sustainability from Antioch New England University.

Sabira Lakhani |
Co-President
Sabira Lakhani is a Masters student at MIT's Integrated Design Management program. She has a background in waste management leading a team of 200 on the Operations and Client Experience Team at Saahas Zero Waste processing 30+ tons of waste per day. She is also the co-founder of Grinding Stone, a zero-waste products company in Bangalore, India. Previously she worked in impact investing venture capital, strategy and management consulting at IBM, and environmental consulting, all in New York.

Marissa is a software engineer who is passionate about waste management and the environment. She uses her software knowledge to help the team with all things tech-related. She has a BSc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Alberta and currently works full-time as a software engineer in Cambridge. |
Sakiko Isomichi |
Tour Coordinator
Sakiko studies International Relations at Harvard Extension School. She was previously trained as a piano technician at North Bennet Street School, organic farm help on certified organic farms and food waste worker on Martha’s Vineyard. As a tour coordinator at MIT Waste Alliance with a unique background, she explores and researches behavioral aspects of waste industry.

Boyu Liu

Treasurer
Boyu Liu is a Masters of Science student at MIT Institute of Data, Systems, and Society's Technology and Policy Program. He studied environmental economics and policy and mathematics at Pomona College, Claremont, CA, and previously worked at a geospatial data analytics company in the Bay Area. He has done research in waste water treatment, battery recycling in China, and worked at the Pomona College Organic Farm's composting facility. Outside of work, he enjoys anything outdoors, music, and random walks. |
Pushkal Sharma

Research and Innovation Coordinator
Pushkal is a first year PhD student in the MIT's Chemical Engineering program and his research interests lie in healthcare and energy. He grew up in India and graduated from IIT Roorkee in 2019. There he got the opportunity to work in several leadership roles and with the Waste Alliance, he looks forward to integrating his interests and experiences to explore waste management. He is also interested in science policy and public outreach. In his free time, he can be found cooking in the kitchen, strolling along the Charles or, simply chatting. |
Dr. Kevin Kung |
Advisor
Kevin Kung is an MIT-trained engineer with physics background. His research currently focuses on decentralized biomass processing and upgrading in remote areas. Kevin co-founded and invested in biomass companies. He has seven years of project implementation and low-cost design experience for social entrepreneurship and community development in the emerging markets. He is interested in having a global impact and committed in particular to the sustainable development of under-served regions.

DR. Abigail Regitsky |
Advisor
Abigail Regitsky is a 2018-2019 Congressional Science Fellow interested in sustainable development, climate change, clean energy, circular economy, advanced manufacturing, and STEM education. She received her PhD from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT, where she studies mechanisms of biomineralization for applications in sustainable solutions, such as carbon sequestration and green building materials. Prior to MIT, she received a BS in materials science and engineering from Georgia Tech.

DR. TimOTHY Gutowski |
Faculty Advisor
Timothy Gutowski is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, where he has been on the faculty since 1981. From 1994 to 2004 he was the director of the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity at M.I.T., and from 2001 to 2005 he was the associate head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering there. His research interests have ranged from polymer processing, to advanced composites manufacturing, to manufacturing systems design, to his current area of study - manufacturing and the environment. He has over 150 technical publications, three books, and seven patents and patent applications. His current area of study is focused on the climate change consequences and mitigation strategies for engineered systems including; manufacturing, transportation, buildings and energy systems. He has studied and worked on issues related to materials usage, recycling and remanufacturing. |
DR. JONATHAN KRONES

Faculty Advisor
Jonathan Krones is an industrial ecologist whose research focuses on the development and implementation of new methods for quantifying waste flows. He has recently completed the first comprehensive accounting of non-hazardous industrial waste in the US in over thirty years. In addition, Jonathan works collaboratively with scholars from a variety of engineering, social science, and humanities disciplines to better understand the effectiveness of various sustainable materials management programs and policies, including municipal curbside composting and food waste rescue mobile apps. He serves on the Boston Zero Waste Advisory Committee and the Technical Advisory Group for the waste chapter of the Carbon Free Boston report, in addition to organizing Fixit Clinics around the greater Boston area. Jonathan is currently a Core Fellow/Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Boston College, where he is teaching courses on alternative energy, environmental crisis, and energy history. He received his PhD in Engineering Systems from MIT in 2016. |
